Plant Breeding & Genetics

Developing high-yielding coffee varieties with enhanced pest resistance, quality, and adaptability for a sustainable future.

About the Division

The Division focuses on developing high-yielding Arabica and Robusta coffee varieties with durable pest and disease resistance, improved quality, and wide adaptability — addressing the evolving needs of the coffee-growing community.

It has successfully developed 13 Arabica and 3 Robusta varieties. Notable Arabica varieties such as Sln.3 (S.795), Sln.6, Sln.9, Sln.5A, Sln.5B, and Chandragiri remain popular across coffee-growing regions. Robusta varieties like S.274 and CxR dominate India's Robusta plantations.

The Division also maintains a vast coffee germplasm collection, comprising 300 Arabica, 73 Robusta, and 17 other species, while actively collaborating with organizations such as World Coffee Research. A new white stem borer-tolerant Arabica variety is under development and will be released for multi-location trials during the centenary celebration.
