Fostering sustainable coffee cultivation in Eastern Ghats and supporting socio-economic development of tribal communities.
The tribal areas in the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are major non-traditional coffee-growing regions. Coffee was introduced here to develop green forest cover in barren hills affected by destructive ‘Podu’ cultivation and to support socio-economic development of local tribes.
A regional station was established in 1976 near Chintapalli village, Visakhapatnam district, Andhra Pradesh, with the main mandate of developing appropriate production technologies for coffee. The station has scientific and technical personnel, well-equipped laboratory facilities, and a 60-hectare coffee farm for research purposes.
