Entomology

The Entomology division came into existence during 1954. The Division focuses on studying major coffee pests and developing eco-friendly management strategies. Key pests addressed include Coffee White Stem Borer (CWSB), Coffee Berry Borer (CBB), Shot Hole Borer (SHB), and sucking pests.

Major contributions include the identification of the male sex pheromone for the management of CWSB using Cross vane Pheromone traps, Stem wrapping with non-woven fabric to prevent CWSB emergence and rejuvenation of infested plants. Suitable cultural practices, such as bark scrubbing, lime application as preventive measures for CWSB infestation. Development of mass trapping technologies for CBB-Broca traps and SHB-Xycom traps. Cultural practices and Phytosanitary measures for all the major pests. The Division also supports growers through training programmes on Integrated pest management and Bee keeping, pest diagnostics and field advisory services, supply of traps and bioagents, and promoting sustainable pest management in coffee plantations.
