CCRI is recognized as a scientific research institution by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The institute conducts extensive research across several disciplines related to coffee cultivation and production. Its key research departments include Plant Breeding & Genetics, Agronomy, Soil Science & Agricultural Chemistry, Plant Physiology, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Post-Harvest Technology, Coffee Biotechnology, and Coffee Quality.
In addition to the main research facilities, CCRI also operates a dedicated Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Climate Resilience & Non-Conventional Breeding in Chettali. This division focuses on advanced research in biotechnology and molecular biology, supporting breeding programmes aimed at developing high-yielding and pest-resistant coffee varieties.
The Quality Evaluation Division, based at the Coffee Board’s headquarters in Bengaluru, works closely with research teams to enhance the quality and flavour of Indian coffee. Through scientific evaluation and collaboration, this division helps ensure that Indian coffee continues to meet high standards in the cup.
