The Centre of Excellence for Climate Resilience and Non-Conventional Breeding in Coffee was established at the Coffee Research Sub-Station (CRSS), Chettalli, and inaugurated on 26 March 2025 by Dr. K. G. Jagadeesha, IAS, CEO & Secretary, Coffee Board, in the presence of the Chairman, Board Members, and senior officials of the Coffee Board.
The Centre was established by strengthening and expanding the capabilities of the Plant Tissue Culture & Biotechnology Division, which was previously functioning at Coffee Board, Mysuru. The relocation to Chettalli marked a strategic transition from a conventional biotechnology laboratory to a dedicated Centre of Excellence focused on developing climate-resilient coffee through advanced plant biotechnology, molecular breeding, genomics, and tissue culture technologies.
Today, the centre aims to be a premier biotechnology research facility, integrating modern tools for genetic improvement, rapid propagation of elite planting material, conservation of coffee genetic resources, and development of resilient coffee varieties capable of addressing emerging challenges posed by climate change.
The Centre of Excellence for Climate Resilience and Non-Conventional Breeding in Coffee is dedicated to developing innovative technologies for sustainable coffee improvement. The Centre integrates plant tissue culture, molecular biology, genomics, molecular breeding, and biotechnology to accelerate the development of climate-resilient, high-yielding, and quality coffee varieties.
Research activities include the development of plant tissue culture and micropropagation protocols for large-scale multiplication of elite coffee genotypes, production of disease-free and true-to-type planting material, and conservation of valuable germplasm through in vitro techniques.
The Centre employs advanced DNA marker technologies for DNA fingerprinting, genetic diversity analysis, varietal identification, and marker-assisted breeding. These approaches support germplasm conservation and accelerate the identification of desirable traits associated with productivity, cup quality, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses.
By combining conventional breeding with modern biotechnology, the Centre is working towards developing coffee varieties with improved resistance to pests, diseases, drought, and other climate-related stresses, thereby contributing to the long-term sustainability and global competitiveness of Indian coffee.
